Some time ago (not very long though)... chemistry was my passion. No seriously. PASSION. No sarcasm, unsincere words used here. I used to really really like what chemistry had to offer. Its promises to unviel the unseen, to explain in superb detail about our surroundings are all about. I loved the idea of being able to stop this RANDOM guy (hey ALZ, i used it here!) and recite the Periodic table, equate the compunds in acid rainfall, mix sugar, spice and everything nice for some good quality all-homemade cotton candy. I even dreamt of the day I would literally hold that graduation scroll high in the air, with thousands of eyes staring jealously at it, and walk out of school with pride. But juz when things start to pick up... **Whack** Reality check!

P.C: Ok BBA. Can you tell me what u get when u add alcohol and carbocilic acid?

BBA: Ceh... So simple! ESTER lor!

P.C: Wah! So C.L.E.V.E.R!

2008......

P.C: Ok BBA, Can you tell me what u get when u add alcohol and carbocilic acid?

BBA: Ceh... So simple! ESTER lor!

P.C: Ok. Then explain if the reaction is SN1 or SN2....

BBA: Err... its....

P.C: then tell me if the reaction is nucleophilic, electrophilic, or elimination.....

BBA: Well, its...

P.C: without forgetting to draw the skeletal formula of the reaction.....

BBA: Harr! But....

P.C: and then tell me the reagent it requires, along with the condition for the reaction....

BBA: Wah teacher! I oso haven...

P.C: and also the condition and reagent for the reagent of the condition which the condition is under the effect of the conditioning reagent at it's optimal temperature, which is also the condition for the reagent to be at the right condition for the reagional sub-atomic condition for the reaction to take place, without leaving out the separation and clevage to be completely reacted in a room with no air-condition.

BBA: ....

If life bites, chemistry got a huge chunk out of mine. You practically get what I'm trying to say here. Its like waking up one day to find yourself on the very tip of the peak of this hill, looking down into the deep oblivion and asking yourself "How did I even get here!"

But as much as I LOVE chemistry, as much as I ADORE the subject, drowning in its AFFECTIONATE pool of unending MERCY and lots of FORGIVING twists and turns, i can't complain. Its my path, my choice, and my grave. ^^

Peace to all STPM takers this year! This is not one letter of surrender. This is where it begins. So starighten up, or when the big marathon begins on this dreaded track towards University, you'll find me so close behind you you'll be screaming for air! (I never said I wasn't gonna take a cab u noe...)

Actually chemistry has a lot of similarities with life in a large scale. The most important aspect of understanding Chemistry is through an indepth understanding of the foundation, one that can enable oneself to write the entire Periodic Table anytime and anywhere. Just as life, knowing the fundamentals of life is via philosophy, not knowledge. Therefore, vAnRYUZUKI; please know your foundations in Chemistry. I heard Mr. DEADman of KL is an expert in such teaching. I'd reckon you should learn from him...

Bridging the Digital Divide MBC Programme

BY ROSLINA MOHAMAD, The Star Online - 2 April 2006

THE notion that information and communication technology (ICT) is only for the elite is incorrect as technology can be made accessible and affordable for all Malaysians.

And to make sure that more people from various walks of life are able to enjoy and benefit from the use of technology, Maxis Communications Bhd has launched several initiatives, including the Maxis Bridging Communities (MBC) programme.

An integrated corporate social responsibility project, MBC focuses on education, ICT and youth. Among the projects initiated by MBC is the Maxis CyberlinQ Web Community Competition 2005, which hones creative thinking skills as well as English and ICT skills.

To promote the competition, several workshops were held nationwide. Lucky contestants had their projects selected for implementation, with funding provided by Maxis.

The prize winners were then chosen based on the successful implementation of the projects, their impact on the target community, and the creativity shown by contestants in reporting the project on the web site provided by Maxis.

Last year's grand prize winner in the Cyberkids Schools category was SK Ganun, Malacca. The winning team, comprising Year Four and Five students, had initially set up an operation to train pre-schoolers in ICT skills.

After winning in the second round of the competition, the team focused on senior citizens in the community, enlisting the aid of students to train the elders using material prepared by teachers.

In the primary school category, SK King George V of Negeri Sembilan bagged the grand prize with their project Innokids Garden.

The project resulted in prototypes for an automatic fish feeder, well, water sprinkler and door, all of which have been made into useful garden tools for the school.

"The competition was a good platform for students to learn about technology," said Innokids team leader Aiman Sulhi Mohd Fadzil.

"The idea to design a 'gogo board' to control the motor of the fish feeder, water sprinkler and door came from the students and teachers."

The students were supervised by their teachers Army Saffuan Abdul Rahman and Norsalasiah Pilus.

SM Methodist Kuala Lumpur bagged the prize in the secondary schools category, with a project to help hearing-impaired students.

Fifth former Lim Zhi Wang said his group had taught 11 hearing-impaired students in the school to use e-mail.

"Since the students could type, we figured it would be better if we taught them how to use e-mail so that we could communicate effectively. That took us four months."

Hearing-impaired student Mohd Aizat Afham said, "I sent e-cards to my friends during the Deepavali and Hari Raya celebrations. I now feel closer to the abang who taught me how to use the Internet."

S. Muniammiah said the project had made one of the participants, Lim Wai Kit, 16, more communicative and receptive.

"Wai Kit is now in the United States on a student exchange programme.

"He was so motivated that he pestered one of the teachers to help him to fill in the application form for the student exchange programme," she added.

Meanwhile, in the fourth category, Maxis Cyberlab Kuala Pilah won with its project to build a sepak takraw court for the community.

To date, Maxis and its partners have set up seven Cyberlabs, with a registration of more than 23,000 members nationwide.

These Cyberlabs partner with local authorities and NGOs to provide ICT education to adults and children.

"The trainers in the labs are willing to teach even senior citizens like me," said Mohd Taib Abdul Rauf, 75.

"One would be foolish not to sign up for the programme as one can get knowledge for free," he added.

Maxis has set aside RM2mil to set up and manage Cyberlabs in Pekan, Kuala Pilah, Dungun, Tanah Merah, Kepala Batas, Serian and Keningau.

The prize winners recently received their prizes from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who also officially launched the Maxis Bridging Community programme and a Maxis Cyberlab in Taman Tasik Sultan Abu Bakar in Pekan.

Also present at the ceremony was Maxis chairman Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor.
